Pittsburg IMPACT Overview

  • IMPACT (Improving Mathematics through Pittsburg's Active Collaboration of Teachers) is a teacher professional development grant for mathematics, grades 3-8. It will be funded through June 2014 by the CA Department of Education, CaMSP grant, which was awarded to P.U.S.D. in January 2011. The goal of the grant is to increase mathematic content knowledge by giving teachers a greater understanding of Algebra by highlighting its connection to Number Sense and articulating Algebra concepts from K-Algebra 1 standards. Also, teachers will learn more effective delivery of curriculum through stronger pedagogical strategies, lesson planning, observation, and coaching of the three phase model of instruction with the connection to Algebra.

Our 48 participating teachers attend a 60 hour intensive summer course during the summer, which is taught by our partnering professors from CSU East Bay and Los Medanos College. The strategies they learn during the institute will follow them into the classroom. Teachers will also be coached during the year to assist them with the implementation of the strategies. (See our Partnership Profile for more information.)

We are very excited about IMPACT and how it will not only assist the teachers in building their understanding of math and provide them with more pedagogical strategies, but how it will directly impact the students of P.U.S.D. to become better math students.
