Board President's Remarks 

"Two weeks ago was a week that tested our community, as we were exposed to an act of  racism that literally broke our hearts and caused pain in our community. 

Despite the pain, we relied on everything right in our community to confront racism and to let  it know that we will never let it divide us. 

I would like to take this moment to thank our scholars for not staying silent, and for  recognizing that we are stronger against racism when we confront it together. 

Seeing this act of courage filled my heart with hope and optimism, as I know that we are too  strong, and too united to ever be divided by hate. 

It’s these tests that show us who we really are, and I am proud of who we are, and even  prouder of who our scholars are going to be. 

It is often said that students are the future. 

At the Pittsburg Unified School District, our scholars showed us what we have always known,  the future is here now, and they are already leading. 

I would also like to take this moment to thank our superintendent, and her team. 

From the moment this issue was brought to your attention, you responded with an  overwhelming commitment to protect the safety and well-being of our scholars, staff, and our  community. 

I want to thank the Pittsburg High School Teachers, Counselors, Administrators, and Staff for  the classroom lessons regarding the deplorable, negative, and historical impact of  organizations such as the one depicted in the viral photo. 

I would also like to thank our community, and the East County NAACP Leadership for their  concerns and dialog. 

Although the work of healing is not complete, we have much more work to do, I am proud of  how we showed the world, what kind of community we are during difficult times. 

Let’s continue to work together and to heal our community."

 

Superintendent’s Remarks

"From the moment of last week’s racist incident at Pittsburg High, the entire community sprang into action in order to ensure that our students and staff knew that we were not going to tolerate this type of behavior on our campuses. 

We recognized that the path towards healing was going to take us bringing all of our stakeholders together and addressing issues of systemic racism along with the incident at the high school. 

Pittsburg has always been a community that has embraced our differences because we know that, in our differences, is the power of our community. 

As our board President stated, our district cannot be prouder of our students.  

You stepped up and immediately became partners and leaders working side-by-side with us to find solutions that will ensure the unity of our community. 

I have devoted my entire life to educating young people because I have always been driven by the idea that the world is a better place when our youth are the table. 

As painful as last week was for us, I am inspired by the fact that our students rose to the moment and had the confidence to take their seat at that table. 

As adults, we do everything we can to protect our youth from the negativity of the world. 

But as hard as we try, as last week demonstrated, it is not always possible. 

The possibilities that last week demonstrated were that, no matter how large the negativity, our students and our community will never shrink in those moments because we have each other. 

I thank the PHS community and the team of educators, counselors, admin who came together so quickly to plan the initial lesson, gather feedback from that, and expand the committee to plan the continued work at the school. While we work to heal from this, we also remain committed to break down the barriers of systemic racism in our district

We have much more work to do in healing, but we embrace it because it will bring us even closer and make us even stronger. Thank you."

COMENTARIOS DEL PRESIDENTE DE LA MESA DIRECTIVA Y DE LA SUPERINTENDENTE EN LA REUNIÓN DE LA MESA DIRECTIVA DEL 10 DE NOVIEMBRE DE 2021

Comentarios del Presidente de la Mesa Directiva 

"Hace dos semanas fue una semana que puso a prueba a nuestra comunidad, ya que estuvimos expuestos a un acto de racismo que literalmente nos rompió el corazón y causó dolor en nuestra comunidad. 

A pesar del dolor, nos apoyamos en todo lo bueno de nuestra comunidad para afrontar el racismo y hacerle saber que nunca dejaremos que nos divida. 

Me gustaría aprovechar este momento para agradecer a nuestros alumnos por no quedarse callados y por reconocer que somos más fuertes contra el racismo cuando nos enfrentamos a él juntos. 

Ver este acto de valentía llenó mi corazón de esperanza y optimismo, ya que sé que somos demasiado fuertes y estamos demasiado unidos para que el odio nos divida. 

Son estas pruebas las que nos muestran quiénes somos realmente, y estoy orgullosa de quiénes somos, y aún más orgullosa de quiénes van a ser nuestros alumnos. 

A menudo se dice que los estudiantes son el futuro. 

En el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Pittsburg, nuestros alumnos nos mostraron lo que siempre hemos sabido, el futuro está aquí ahora y ya están dirigiendo. 

También me gustaría aprovechar este momento para agradecer a nuestra superintendente y a su equipo. 

Desde el momento en que este problema fue traído a su atención, usted respondió con un inmenso compromiso para proteger la seguridad y el bienestar de nuestros alumnos, el personal, y nuestra comunidad. 

Quiero agradecer a los maestros, consejeros, administradores y personal de la escuela Pittsburg High por las lecciones en el aula sobre el impacto deplorable, negativo e histórico de organizaciones tales como la representada en la foto viral. 

También me gustaría agradecer a nuestra comunidad, y al Liderazgo de la NAACP del Este del Condado por sus preocupaciones y el diálogo. 

Aunque el trabajo de recuperación no está completo, tenemos mucho más trabajo por hacer, estoy orgulloso de cómo mostramos al mundo, el tipo de comunidad que somos en tiempos difíciles. 

Sigamos trabajando juntos y para recuperar nuestra comunidad."

 

Comentarios de la Superintendente

"Desde el momento del incidente racista de la semana pasada en la escuela Pittsburg High, toda la comunidad entró en acción para asegurar que nuestros estudiantes y el personal supieran que no íbamos a tolerar este tipo de comportamiento en nuestros planteles. 

Reconocimos que la senda hacia la recuperación iba a requerir que reuniéramos a todas nuestras partes interesadas y abordáramos las cuestiones de racismo sistémico junto con el incidente en la escuela preparatoria. 

Pittsburg siempre ha sido una comunidad que ha acogido nuestras diferencias porque sabemos que, en nuestras diferencias, está el poder de nuestra comunidad. 

Como dijo el presidente de nuestra mesa directiva, nuestro distrito no puede estar más orgulloso de nuestros estudiantes.  

De inmediato, ustedes tomaron la iniciativa y se convirtieron en socios y líderes que trabajan codo a codo con nosotros para encontrar soluciones que garanticen la unidad de nuestra comunidad. 

He dedicado toda mi vida a la educación de los jóvenes porque siempre me ha motivado la idea de que el mundo es un lugar mejor cuando nuestros jóvenes forman parte de la mesa. 

A pesar de lo doloroso que fue para nosotros la semana pasada, me inspira el hecho de que nuestros estudiantes estuvieran a la altura del momento y tuvieran la confianza de ocupar su asiento en esa mesa. 

Como adultos, hacemos todo lo posible para proteger a nuestros jóvenes de la negatividad del mundo. 

Pero por mucho que lo intentemos, como demostró la semana pasada, no siempre es posible. 

Las posibilidades que demostró la semana pasada fueron que, por muy grande que sea la negatividad, nuestros estudiantes y nuestra comunidad nunca se encogerán en esos momentos porque nos tenemos los unos a los otros. 

Agradezco a la comunidad de la PHS y al equipo de educadores, consejeros y administradores que se unieron tan rápidamente para planear la lección inicial, recopilar las opiniones de eso, y ampliar el comité para planear el trabajo continuo en la escuela. Mientras trabajamos para recuperarnos de esto, también seguimos comprometidos a romper las barreras del racismo sistémico en nuestro distrito.

Tenemos mucho más trabajo que hacer para recuperarnos, pero lo acogemos porque nos acercará aún más y nos hará más fuertes. Gracias."
